Title: A Child Called It Pdf One Child's Courage to Survive
Author: Dave Pelzer
Published Date: 1993
Page: 184

David J. Pelzer's mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and somewhat nurturant to her children--but not to David, whom she referred to as "an It." This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the author as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling's diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas stove by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule--no walking on the grass at school!--but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn't protect him; only an alert schoolteacher saved David. One wants to learn more about his ordeal and its aftermath, and now he's written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system. Though it's a grim story, A Child Called "It" is very much in the tradition of Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the many books in that upbeat series, whose author Pelzer thanks for helping get his book going. It's all about weathering adversity to find love, and Pelzer is an expert witness. Grade 9 Up?This autobiographical account charts the abuse of a young boy as his alcoholic mother first isolates him from the rest of the family; then torments him; and finally nearly kills him through starvation, poisoning, and one dramatic stabbing. Pelzer's portrayal of domestic tyranny and eventual escape is unforgettable, but falls short of providing understanding of extreme abuse or how he made his journey from "Victim to Victor." It takes some work to get past the poor writing and the self-aggrandizing back matter, but the book tries fervently to provide a much-needed perspective. One of the greater obstacles to healing for males is admitting that they have been victims, especially if their perpetrator is a woman. This author has overcome that obstacle and succeeded in life by such masculine norms as joining the Air Force and receiving awards for his volunteerism. However, while personal accounts of child maltreatment provide crucial information about the realities of childhood, youngsters need insight and hope in order to digest the raw material of abuse. James Deem's The 3 NBs of Julian Drew (Houghton, 1994) is a well-crafted, fictional work that effectively covers much of the same ground.?Carolyn Polese, Humboldt State University, Arcata, CACopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

Amazing book This book most certainly does its job on bringing awareness towards child abuse. This book is the account of one child's unthinkable abuse. It offered me great insight on a child's perspective as he goes from having a loving family environment to a victim of child brutality. This book offers much knowledge on how to escape that kind of life and that it is okay to be different and that you're not alone. Lastly, it shows that the impact his childhood had on his life was great enough to influence him into writing this book and bringing awareness.Difficult It took me a long time to read the book. I had to put it away many, many times. My own life has so many similarities. In a different way, with different people, but the outcome is the same. And the struggle to survive is too. The daily struggle to regain your life and to believe you are worth something. That. Thanks Dave Pelzer, for your courage to put into words what you went through and in doing so helping people like me.Hard but important to read As a social worker, no one likes to talk about these sorts of things. What makes child abuse different is how deeply it’s impact goes and how many people it impacts. It’s an evil no one wants to see or accept and many will look the other way. And then there are those who will not turn away and instead step in and risk pieces of them self to try and save a child. David tells his story in a raw way that leaves you saddened but inspired. It’s a hard read that you can’t put down. You almost “feel” what he’s going through. Beautifully and courageously written.

“A nervy, soulful, genuinely surprising it-could-happen-to-you thriller ― a book to make you peer over your shoulder for days afterwards.”―A.J. Finn, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window

Winner of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, The Nowhere Child is screenwriter Christian White’s internationally bestselling debut thriller of psychological suspense about a woman uncovering devastating secrets about her family―and her very identity…

Kimberly Leamy is a photography teacher in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-six years earlier, Sammy Went, a two-year old girl vanished from her home in Manson, Kentucky. An American accountant who contacts Kim is convinced she was that child, kidnapped just after her birthday. She cannot believe the woman who raised her, a loving social worker who died of cancer four years ago, crossed international lines to steal a toddler.

On April 3rd, 1990, Jack and Molly Went’s daughter Sammy disappeared from the inside their Kentucky home. Already estranged since the girl’s birth, the couple drifted further apart as time passed. Jack did his best to raise and protect his other daughter and son while Molly found solace in her faith. The Church of the Light Within, a Pentecostal fundamentalist group who handle poisonous snakes as part of their worship, provided that faith. Without Sammy, the Wents eventually fell apart.

Now, with proof that she and Sammy are in fact the same person, Kim travels to America to reunite with a family she never knew she had. And to solve the mystery of her abduction―a mystery that will take her deep into the dark heart of religious fanaticism where she must fight for her life against those determined to save her soul…

Wonderful Debut. I enjoyed this book so much. It gripped me from the beginning, and I was enthralled all the way through.I didn’t give it five stars for a couple reasons, an incident at the beginning of the book, and the quickness of the ending. I would have liked a little more time at the end of the book with some of the characters. It seemed to end quickly. I don’t want to say too much, I’m afraid I would end up giving spoilers. With that said, I absolutely loved this book. There some twists and turns, the story had heart, and it was beautifully written. I read it through in one day, I could not put it down. I look forward to the next book from this author.Dark and menacing tale of a dysfunctional family This is an excellent debut novel by Christian White. He has managed to take the tale of a missing, abducted child and put a new spin on it.Thirty year old Kim Leamy is living in Melbourne, teaching photography when she is approached by an American man who tells her he thinks she is Sammy Went, abducted as a two year old child twenty eight years ago from a small town in Kentucky. At first she brushes him off, but he later comes back with evidence that makes her start questioning her own origins and drives her to Kentucky to find out the truth. What she finds are some dysfunctional families and a pentecostal cult that worships with snakes.Told in two streams, Then and Now, the days following Sammy's disappearance and Kim's current investigation lead her to discover what happened to Sammy in a twist I didn't see coming. Christian White serves up a dark and menacing background to this story of a missing child and the final chapters are tense and very scaryBrilliantly crafted, the story floats seamlessly between the past ... An edge of the seat read.Brilliantly crafted, the story floats seamlessly between the past and the present - with twists and turns that are at times predictable interspersed with moments of mind-numbing surprise - this book delivers to the last page. The ending that tied the whole plotline together was a master-stroke and was one I never saw coming. The characters are well drawn and totally believable, and run the whole gamut of the human sprectrum.I read it from beginning to end and know it will be a book I'll dip into many times more.A great book I'd recommend to anyone who likes mystery, suspense and a little crime thrown in, but not in a gruesome way.

Keto for Life Pdf

ISBN: 1628602899
Title: Keto for Life Pdf Look Better, Feel Better, and Watch the Weight Fall off with 160

Mellissa Sevigny is the cook, photographer, and writer behind the popular food blog I Breathe I'm Hungry, which focuses primarily on low-carb, ketogenic, and gluten-free eating. Having received her first cookbook when she was just four years old, Mellissa has been in the kitchen ever since. She has appeared on ABC’s The View several times. Born in Connecticut and a Yankee to the bone, Mellissa currently lives on the beach in Belize with her husband of 24 years, their 10-year-old son, and two very spoiled cats. In addition to cooking and photography, Mellissa is an avid reader, gardener, and lover of coffee, bacon, and bourbon.

The ketogenic lifestyle has been proven to aid in weight loss and to help people achieve better overall health. Mellissa Sevigny, the voice behind the highly acclaimed food blog I Breathe, I’m Hungry, has been a leader in low-carb, ketogenic living for many years and understands the key factors to achieve lifelong success. In her new book, Keto for Life, she delivers a complete road map to adopting and sustaining a ketogenic diet. Keto for Life is a book for real people with busy lives, picky family members, and moderate budgets. Mellissa firmly believes that budget, time, and eating with loved ones should not be deterrents to living a keto lifestyle, feeling great, and enjoying the food you’re eating. Keto for Life gives readers tools and recipes to thrive on keto. People who are new to the ketogenic diet want answers to the common problems of how to eat keto without needing years of experience as prep cook in a commercial kitchen and how to stay within their grocery budget, keep the rest of the family from staging a mutiny, and not be forced to shop, prep, and cook full-time to make their goals a reality. Keto for Life educates readers on the do’s and don’ts of keto, providing a wealth of tips and strategies to help them get started right away and work toward their goals. Readers can pick up this book on a Monday and be well on the way to their new keto lifestyle by the weekend.

A keto kitchen treasure--low-carb made delicious and easy! I've been a fan of author Sevigny's I Breathe I'm Hungry recipe blog for 4+ years. Her work is my #1 go-to for keto meal planning. Not a single recipe has ever disappointed. Anytime I need to counter the myth that a keto diet lacks variety or veggies, I just share an IBIH link and rest my case! So, I was already primed to love this new book, Keto for Life, but it has exceeded my high expectations. It's a keto kitchen treasure, such a pleasure to have this work in print form for off-screen meal planning (and foodie swooning)! Here's what a love about it:===The Meal Plans===Chapter 2 offers a 4 week meal plan. Each plan has its daily macros worked up and a weekly shopping list in quantities for 1 person, so it's very easy to multiple for any number of people. The meal plans are a great way to get going fast and know the total day's macros are balanced. The calorie counts for the meal plans are pretty low-moderate (1200-1600) and the other macros also moderate, which makes room for me to add some extra protein for my higher personal macros. The carb counts are often well under 20g ECC also, so there's wiggle room to squeeze in a bit more veg or increase serving sizes a little--the flexibility is nice!===The Recipes===Well-organized and excellent variety of recipes from several culinary "genres." Colorful veggies worked in at every opportunity, really maximizing all the delicious nutrition one enjoy despite a keto-low carb count!Customizing new meal plans (or just picking out recipes individually) is made very easy with at-a-glance macros for calories, fat, protein, carbs, fiber, net carbs in a color-bar footer for each recipe. IBIH recipes are typically easy to make and use easy-to-find ingredients. The same holds true in Keto for Life! Each recipe is prefaced with a quick note from Sevigny about the recipe (similar to those found in the blog--fun and motivating to read) and a helpful info line for yield, serving size, prep time, and cook time. I'm grateful that ingredients are offered in both volume and weight measures as appropriate since I use a lot of weight measurement for carb-counting precision.===The Book Design===The book's graphic and info organization design are perfection--so easy to navigate and so visually inspiring. As a document designer interested in user experience and usability, I'm impressed! Great use of color, sidebar spaces, illustrations, photographs, and call-out boxes such as "Make it Easy," "Pro Tips," and "Family-Friendly Tip."The food photography is gorgeous, as per usual for the I Breathe I'm Hungry website. From my years enjoying IBIH recipes, I know that they turn out every bit as appealing and delicious as they look in these photos, too. I want to make every single thing in this book!===Thoughtful Appendices===- recommended resources (keto books, blogs, sites, forums, food brands)- at-a-glance visual index of all the recipes using small images for each- allergen index for each recipe noting which recipes are dairy free, nut free, egg free, or vegetarian. (I'm assuming gluten/wheat isn't listed here because none of the recipes include that allergen.)===Orientation===And for those new to keto, Keto for Life offers a 40-page orientation to the keto diet, offering lots of helpful how-to info kept accessible, never overwhelming. It also includes tips on useful kitchen appliances for keto cooking and tips on especially low-carb ingredient alternatives, such as veggie comparison charts (e.g. kale vs collards: similar foods, big carb difference!).Keto for Life will be my new favorite cookbook for a very long time! I anticipate using it both while "doing keto" and even when I'm "off keto" because these recipes are healthy, delicious, practical, and easy to make either way!BEST OF THE BEST There are a lot of low carb food blogs out there but Melissa Sevigny is one of the very best. Most of the blog writers are good at one niche of low carb cooking (ex desserts) but not good across the board. Melissa excells at all of it (although she is definately the Monday Meatball Queen....wow, she covers the international spectrum of fabulous and creative meatball creations....and so family and pocketbook friendly too).If you were to only buy one low carb / keto cookbook you could not go wrong buying this book (I am also a fan of George Stella...he and Melissa know what they are doing!). I have never tried one of her recipes that I did not like and constantly recommend her blog to new low carbers. Her recipes are very accessable and do not require a cubbard full of oddball ingredients.I highly recommend it. You will not be sorry.
