Title: Our Dogs, Ourselves Pdf How We Live with Dogs Now

The best-selling cognitive scientist and author of Inside of a Dog, Alexandra Horowitz, takes an eye-opening, informative, and wholly entertaining examination of the dog-human relationship and reflects on the culture of dogdom.

"You're so cute and so smart. And worth money! I could marry you," said a woman to her goldendoodle. "Be nice! When you get tired, you get nasty," reminded the man to his rambunctious dog.

Alexandra Horowitz is intrigued by the various ways humans are changed by our relationship with dogs: When humans unconsciously made the decision to domesticate dogs, they were changing the course of our species' development. And, too, when each person makes the decision to breed, own, or adopt a dog, we enter into a relationship that will change us. It changes the course of our days: Dogs need to be walked, fed, attended to. It can change the course of our lives: Dogs weave their way into our lives with their constant silent presence by our sides. It has changed, too, the course of our species.

In Our Dogs, Ourselves, Horowitz examines what's called the "dog-human bond": examining all aspects of the complexity of this unique interspecies pairing. From her position as a dog scientist, she uses the science of dogs and dog-human interaction to ground a consideration of the various ways that dogs, as a species, reflect us, and how they reflect (sometimes badly, sometimes well) on us. And she goes beyond the cognitive science to consider the culture, laws, and human dynamics that reveal and restrict this bond between two disparate species.

Much of what we accept as the way to live with dogs is odd, surprising, contradictory, revelatory, and sometimes disturbing. This audiobook gets inside and explains the nuances of the dog-human connection, both on an individual basis and societally. The result: We are made conscious about dogs as never before.

Thoughtful, engaging and endearing essays on woman's and man's best friends Dog lover, as I am, I know that dogs provide unconditional love and caring for me, and so many of us. More like members of our families than their legal status as property, dogs are central in our lives, and live at the periphery of our considerations -- adoring our company and spending the majority of their lives waiting for us to open the front door. This wonderful collection of essays about the role and relationship between man and woman - and man and woman's best friend, engage us in consideration of issues regarding the welfare of dogs, and our opportunities to return the love our dogs show us. Horowitz addresses serious issues like how the dog is bred, to fun considerations like the perfect dog name, does my dog love me, and dog talk - role it serves dogs and their owners. The author shares her extensive knowledge of dogs and her wonderful command of language in a personal and engaging way that makes the weight and complexity of these issues that need tackling clear and engaging.Wit and Wisdom Alexandra Horowitz, director of the Canine Cognition Laboratory at Barnard College knows--and loves--dogs. For a dog owner, her book is especially amusing, educational and thought-provoking, as the author offers witty observations based on two decades of study on the behavior of both canines and their people--how people speak to their pets, for example, or pick their names. (She hesitates before saying "owner.") The author also knowledgeably addresses tougher topics, such as whether dogs should be routinely neutered and issues related to specific breeds. After reading this book, you will enjoy dogs in a whole new way. A great gift for a dog lover.Loved this book! This book is so interesting and well written, a must-have for any dog-lover. Horowitz is both deeply knowledgable and hugely engaging, and I feel, having read this, that I understand so much more about how my dogs experience the world. Parts of this book are sobering, but it's nevertheless a hugely engaging read. I especially loved the chapter on Things People Say to their Dogs. Highly recommend this book!
