Title: Running with Sherman Pdf The Donkey with the Heart of a Hero
Author: Christopher McDougall
Published Date: 2019

An Amazon Best Book of October 2019: Readers—and runners—will recognize Christopher McDougall’s name as the author of the best-seller Born to Run, and his latest, Running with Sherman, is part animal love story, part adventure book, part feminist running manifesto, and part scientific exploration into healing. What it lacks in the cutting edge scientific research that helped make Born to Run a hit, it makes up for with heart and…fuzzy animals. Journalist McDougall lives on a farm in Amish Country (PA), and one day his neighbor alerts him to a donkey that has been neglected by its hoarder owner. McDougall adopts the donkey—Sherman—sight unseen and receives a traumatized, unhealthy animal who can barely walk due to his neglected hooves. While nursing Sherman back to health with the help of an equine expert, McDougall learns that donkeys thrive from having a job, and he remembers that ambitious athletes like himself race burros once a year in Colorado. Thus kicks off McDougall and Sherman’s training for the aforementioned annual burro race. Along the way they pick up a wacky cast of characters: two additional donkey running pals; a young man recovering from depression and a suicide attempt; McDougall’s incredibly patient, former hula-dancer wife turned trail runner and donkey whisperer; an Amish running club; two women who drive McDougall and donkeys across the country…you get the idea. McDougall is a fantastic storyteller and a witty writer: “The Amish have a better retention rate than Netflix: roughly 90 percent of young Amish adults choose to stick with the faith and join the church for life.” A fascinating and inspiring hybrid nonfiction salve to the problems of our day, Running with Sherman achieves the running equivalent of a hole-in-one. --Sarah Gelman, Amazon Book Review Christopher McDougall covered wars in Rwanda and Angola as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press before writing his best-selling book Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led him to create the Outside magazine web series, "Art of the Hero." He currently lives with his wife, two daughters, and a farmyard menagerie in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

"A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor . . . McDougall is a gifted storyteller who gets to the heart of the human-animal connection." --John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog

From the best-selling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America.

When Chris McDougall agreed to take in a donkey from an animal hoarder, he thought it would be no harder than the rest of the adjustments he and his family had made after moving from Philadelphia to the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. But when he arrived, Sherman was in such bad shape he could barely move, and his hair was coming out in clumps. Chris decided to undertake a radical rehabilitation program designed not only to heal Sherman's body but to heal his mind as well. It turns out the best way to soothe a donkey is to give it a job, and so Chris decided to teach Sherman how to run. He'd heard about burro racing--a unique type of race where humans and donkeys run together in a call-back to mining days--and decided he and Sherman would enter the World Championship in Colorado.

Easier said than done. In the course of Sherman's training, Chris would have to recruit several other runners, both human and equine, and call upon the wisdom of burro racers, goat farmers, Amish running club members, and a group of irrepressible female long-haul truckers. Along the way, he shows us the life-changing power of animals, nature, and community.

A feel-good book, especially for animal and sports lovers There's nothing not to like about this heart-warming book. The author is a former journalist who knows how to keep his sentences from rambling and his focus on point. He's a dedicated runner, as his two previous books attest. I am NOT a runner, nor an athlete of any kind, but I enjoyed all the interesting encounters with those who are, the stories of sports I'd never heard of before. Tied to his passion for running is his passion for animals, and that's where I tumbled into the book. Sherman, whose winsome portrait adorns the cover, was a rescue donkey. When the author saw in what dreadful shape the poor creature was, he left no option unexplored in his search to bring Sherman back into health and happiness. This book is a wonderful journey through their mutual encounters with people, places, and projects, until success is achieved and Sherman becomes what he was always meant to be. Frankly, even if you don't like animals or sports, this is so engagingly written that you'll enjoy it for itself. The first thing I did was to get the other two books by the author, because I can tell I'll enjoy them, too.Inspiration From A Man And A Donkey I loved the science in this book and have been reciting the facts to any one who will listen. I have learned so much about donkeys and people. The many photos connect you even more to their stories. There is a main story of the people who became involved to first save the donkey, Sherman's life, then to bring him out of depression then to give him a purpose, a reason to live.Spinning around the central story are many stories of Christ McDougall's life before he met Mika, his future wife, then their life together, all the friends that they made in Amish country and tales of the famous donkey race in Colorado, and humor filled stories , of people trying to recover after devastating circumstances and the quirky behavior of donkeys. This book wraps up deep into the story and before you know it, you are wondering how you can squeeze a little more time reading. I knew it would happen but I was prepared for the big disappointment that the book was finally over. I had to take a few days after reading it to contemplate all that I loved and learned before writing this reveiw.Fun, great photos and a nice story My husband has a Mammoth Spotted Jack (extra large donkey in black and white colors) that he rescued 14 years ago. The Donkey arrived emaciated, with grossly overgrown feet and wounds all over his ears. He and that Donkey are bonded at the hip while....Donkey and I have a relationship marked by its purity of our disdain for one another. I suspect this is because I was the one doing all the medications, hoof trimming, and wound treatment. My husband was the one doing all the fun stuff like feed, peppermints and grooming.Nonetheless, I read this book knowing that I don't like donkeys - they are loud, stubborn and vengeful. I prefer my Andalusian horses and dogs. The Donkey prefers anyone else to me despite the fact that I feed him every day and turn him out every morning.I have to admit that I really enjoyed this tale. It's very well written, crisp and clean. The voice feels real and honest which isn't always the case with memoirs. The care and upkeep and training info for the donkeys included sounds correct .... Even the parts about stubborn nonsense. There's a distinct joy that comes through on almost every page here and I laughed out loud several times. The included photos are great.

A USA Today Best Book of Fall 2019 One of the New York Times's 18 New Books to Watch for this OctoberAn L.A. Times Book Club PickOne of Entertainment Weekly's Biggest Books of Fall 2019One of Time's Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2019One of Boston Globe's Great Books of the FallOne of Bustle's 10 New #MeToo Movement Books to Read in Fall 2019One of Book Riot's 50 Best Books to Read This Fall Ronan Farrow is a contributing writer to The New Yorker, where his investigative reporting has won the Pulitzer Prize for public service, the National Magazine Award, and the George Polk Award, among other honors. He previously worked as an anchor and investigative reporter at MSNBC and NBC News, with his print commentary and reporting appearing in publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post. Before his career in journalism, he served as a State Department official in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence. Farrow has been named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People and one of GQ's Men of the Year. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and a member of the New York Bar. He recently completed a Ph.D. in political science at Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He lives in New York.

In a dramatic account of violence and espionage, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Ronan Farrow exposes serial abusers and a cabal of powerful interests hell-bent on covering up the truth, at any cost.

In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Ronan Farrow to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood's most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

All the while, Farrow and his producer faced a degree of resistance they could not explain -- until now. And a trail of clues revealed corruption and cover-ups from Hollywood to Washington and beyond.

This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement.

Both a spy thriller and a meticulous work of investigative journalism, Catch and Kill breaks devastating new stories about the rampant abuse of power and sheds far-reaching light on investigations that shook our culture.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Free Pdf

ISBN: B0192CTMX2
Title: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Pdf

"'Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. Just stick out your wand hand, step on board and we can take you anywhere you want to go.'"

When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss...

Prisoner of Azkaban Will Lock Up Your Reader's Heart and Refuse to Release It Until the Final Page Now thirteen, Harry Potter heads into his third year at Hogwarts. Third year is a big step for Harry and friends; they get to choose electives, learn harder magic, and best of all, get to go to Hogsmeade on field trip weekends. As usual though, Harry's horrible Muggle aunt and uncle won't sign his permission form or even acknowledge his wizarding background; they tell people he's been sent to a reform school for dangerous criminal boys. Ha--if they only knew Harry's real school will be more dangerous and exciting than ever this year!J.K. Rowling has, what can I say, outdone herself. Prisoner of Azkaban gets off to a bang of a start, with Harry learning a convicted killer named Sirius Black is after him, having escaped from the notorious Azkaban. To his credit though, Harry isn't about to let a little thing like a serial killer ruin his big third year. He's got plans, such as winning the Quidditch Cup for Gryffindor for the first time in years. But J.K. goes beyond the simple "avoid the crazed killer" plot. She adds well-timed and delicious details and subplots, such as Hagrid finally getting to teach Care of Magical Creatures, a secret that could land Hermione in the hospital wing all year (at minimum), and Harry's discovery of the Marauder's Map. Most authors would drop their Quaffles somewhere, but J.K. manages to keep all her plot threads tight and making sense.Harry Potter and friends, as well as some new characters, get some superb development here. As another reviewer noted, the Hogwarts kids are growing up, and it's obvious in the problems they face and how they respond to each other, as well as the people in their lives. Harry faces some traumatic truths about what happened to his mom and dad; Ron continues growing into his place at Hogwarts; and Hermione pulls off one of the most breath-stopping climaxes in the series so far. (I tend to agree with a fan who says every book should be called Harry Potter and the Time Hermione Did Absolutely Everything). Even the bad guys get a little more sympathetic. For example, I still hate Snape, but I had to admit he had a point when he complained about Harry getting special treatment and doing as he pleased. Maybe it's the adult/former teacher/Muggle in me, but I couldn't help feeling Snape got a bad deal--until the end, that is, when he turned right back into a first-class jerk.If I hate Snape, I have to say I love Lupin. He made Defense Against the Dark Arts fascinating for me and his students; I wanted to go to one of his classes. He's the kind of teacher I always wanted to be. I also identified with him based on his secrets and standing as an outcast. There are rumors floating around that J.K. wrote Lupin's affliction to stand in for HIV/AIDS. If she did, that's brilliant--it points us to the stigma faced by people with illnesses and disabilities, and encourages us to treat them with respect in a non-preachy way. Speaking of Lupin, I absolutely loved the subplot with him, his friends, and the Marauder's Map. The scene where the Map insults Snape is downright hilarious.Other favorite parts of note: As a cat-lover, I cheered for Hermione adopting a cat. The subplot with Hagrid and Buckbeak is heartwarming, heartbreaking, and triumphant--not an easy mix to pull off. I'm not into sports, but that Quidditch final had me loathe to put the book away. GO, GRYFFINDORS! And I do wonder what's going to happen between Harry and Cho Chang...kudos for picking a Ravenclaw girl, Harry. We're the best of the lot. :)Read it--you'll love it!Beautiful editions for fans & children These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.Missing Pages as some were Double Printed I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

Limitless Mind Pdf

ISBN: 0062851748
Title: Limitless Mind Pdf Learn, Lead, and Live Without Barriers
Author: Jo Boaler
Published Date: 2019-09-03
Page: 256

“Boaler is one of those rare and remarkable educators who not only know the secret of great teaching but also know how to give that gift to others.”  (CAROL DWECK, author of Mindset)“Jo Boaler is one of the most creative and innovative educators today. Limitless Mind marries cutting-edge brain science with her experience in the classroom, not only proving that each of us has limitless potential but offering strategies for how we can achieve it.” (LAURENE POWELL JOBS) Dr. Jo Boaler is a professor of education and equity at Stanford University and the faculty director of youcubed—an education resource that has reached over 230 million students. She is the author of the first MOOC on mathematics teaching and learning, as well as nine mathematics books and numerous research articles. Her work has been published in the New York Times, TIME magazine, The Telegraph, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and many other news outlets. She was named by the BBC as one of eight educators “changing the face of education.” She lives in Stanford, California.

In this revolutionary book, a professor of education at Stanford University and acclaimed math educator who has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education, reveals the six keys to unlocking learning potential, based on the latest scientific findings.

From the moment we enter school as children, we are made to feel as if our brains are fixed entities, capable of learning certain things and not others, influenced exclusively by genetics. This notion follows us into adulthood, where we tend to simply accept these established beliefs about our skillsets (i.e. that we don’t have “a math brain” or that we aren’t “the creative type”). These damaging—and as new science has revealed, false—assumptions have influenced all of us at some time, affecting our confidence and willingness to try new things and limiting our choices, and, ultimately, our futures.

Stanford University professor, bestselling author, and acclaimed educator Jo Boaler has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education. In Limitless Mind, she explodes these myths and reveals the six keys to unlocking our boundless learning potential. Her research proves that those who achieve at the highest levels do not do so because of a genetic inclination toward any one skill but because of the keys that she reveals in the book. Our brains are not “fixed,” but entirely capable of change, growth, adaptability, and rewiring. Want to be fluent in mathematics? Learn a foreign language? Play the guitar? Write a book? The truth is not only that anyone at any age can learn anything, but the act of learning itself fundamentally changes who we are, and as Boaler argues so elegantly in the pages of this book, what we go on to achieve.

A Limitless Mind Jo Boaler's Limitless Mind goes in depth into six habits of what she calls a "limitless mind", each of which is based on her own & other's research. Each chapter explains a habit and shares case study-like testimonials about people adopting the habit. The book has some practical application woven throughout; however, the weight of each chapter is on the many testimonials regarding how adopting a limitless outlook helped both teachers and students. I do wish she would have shared more practical ways to apply the research, especially in the beginning chapters. I'm convinced--but how do I apply these in my classroom? The appendix has suggested resources with typed out links, & I'm hoping the final edition will have QR codes (print version) and live links (e-book version) for ease of use.Overall, I recommend this book & will be reading it with colleagues as a book club selection.*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.*Finally a book so I can share Jo’s great ideas with parents and others! I’ve been a fan of Jo’s work for a long time and Mathematical Mindsets was a game changer for me, so I’m super excited to have a book that is not only math-teaching focused so I can share the powerful ideas with others!
