An Amazon Best Book of October 2019: Readers—and runners—will recognize Christopher McDougall’s name as the author of the best-seller Born to Run, and his latest, Running with Sherman, is part animal love story, part adventure book, part feminist running manifesto, and part scientific exploration into healing. What it lacks in the cutting edge scientific research that helped make Born to Run a hit, it makes up for with heart and…fuzzy animals. Journalist McDougall lives on a farm in Amish Country (PA), and one day his neighbor alerts him to a donkey that has been neglected by its hoarder owner. McDougall adopts the donkey—Sherman—sight unseen and receives a traumatized, unhealthy animal who can barely walk due to his neglected hooves. While nursing Sherman back to health with the help of an equine expert, McDougall learns that donkeys thrive from having a job, and he remembers that ambitious athletes like himself race burros once a year in Colorado. Thus kicks off McDougall and Sherman’s training for the aforementioned annual burro race. Along the way they pick up a wacky cast of characters: two additional donkey running pals; a young man recovering from depression and a suicide attempt; McDougall’s incredibly patient, former hula-dancer wife turned trail runner and donkey whisperer; an Amish running club; two women who drive McDougall and donkeys across the country…you get the idea. McDougall is a fantastic storyteller and a witty writer: “The Amish have a better retention rate than Netflix: roughly 90 percent of young Amish adults choose to stick with the faith and join the church for life.” A fascinating and inspiring hybrid nonfiction salve to the problems of our day, Running with Sherman achieves the running equivalent of a hole-in-one. --Sarah Gelman, Amazon Book Review Christopher McDougall covered wars in Rwanda and Angola as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press before writing his best-selling book Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led him to create the Outside magazine web series, "Art of the Hero." He currently lives with his wife, two daughters, and a farmyard menagerie in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

"A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor . . . McDougall is a gifted storyteller who gets to the heart of the human-animal connection." --John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog

From the best-selling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America.

When Chris McDougall agreed to take in a donkey from an animal hoarder, he thought it would be no harder than the rest of the adjustments he and his family had made after moving from Philadelphia to the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. But when he arrived, Sherman was in such bad shape he could barely move, and his hair was coming out in clumps. Chris decided to undertake a radical rehabilitation program designed not only to heal Sherman's body but to heal his mind as well. It turns out the best way to soothe a donkey is to give it a job, and so Chris decided to teach Sherman how to run. He'd heard about burro racing--a unique type of race where humans and donkeys run together in a call-back to mining days--and decided he and Sherman would enter the World Championship in Colorado.

Easier said than done. In the course of Sherman's training, Chris would have to recruit several other runners, both human and equine, and call upon the wisdom of burro racers, goat farmers, Amish running club members, and a group of irrepressible female long-haul truckers. Along the way, he shows us the life-changing power of animals, nature, and community.

A feel-good book, especially for animal and sports lovers There's nothing not to like about this heart-warming book. The author is a former journalist who knows how to keep his sentences from rambling and his focus on point. He's a dedicated runner, as his two previous books attest. I am NOT a runner, nor an athlete of any kind, but I enjoyed all the interesting encounters with those who are, the stories of sports I'd never heard of before. Tied to his passion for running is his passion for animals, and that's where I tumbled into the book. Sherman, whose winsome portrait adorns the cover, was a rescue donkey. When the author saw in what dreadful shape the poor creature was, he left no option unexplored in his search to bring Sherman back into health and happiness. This book is a wonderful journey through their mutual encounters with people, places, and projects, until success is achieved and Sherman becomes what he was always meant to be. Frankly, even if you don't like animals or sports, this is so engagingly written that you'll enjoy it for itself. The first thing I did was to get the other two books by the author, because I can tell I'll enjoy them, too.Inspiration From A Man And A Donkey I loved the science in this book and have been reciting the facts to any one who will listen. I have learned so much about donkeys and people. The many photos connect you even more to their stories. There is a main story of the people who became involved to first save the donkey, Sherman's life, then to bring him out of depression then to give him a purpose, a reason to live.Spinning around the central story are many stories of Christ McDougall's life before he met Mika, his future wife, then their life together, all the friends that they made in Amish country and tales of the famous donkey race in Colorado, and humor filled stories , of people trying to recover after devastating circumstances and the quirky behavior of donkeys. This book wraps up deep into the story and before you know it, you are wondering how you can squeeze a little more time reading. I knew it would happen but I was prepared for the big disappointment that the book was finally over. I had to take a few days after reading it to contemplate all that I loved and learned before writing this reveiw.Fun, great photos and a nice story My husband has a Mammoth Spotted Jack (extra large donkey in black and white colors) that he rescued 14 years ago. The Donkey arrived emaciated, with grossly overgrown feet and wounds all over his ears. He and that Donkey are bonded at the hip while....Donkey and I have a relationship marked by its purity of our disdain for one another. I suspect this is because I was the one doing all the medications, hoof trimming, and wound treatment. My husband was the one doing all the fun stuff like feed, peppermints and grooming.Nonetheless, I read this book knowing that I don't like donkeys - they are loud, stubborn and vengeful. I prefer my Andalusian horses and dogs. The Donkey prefers anyone else to me despite the fact that I feed him every day and turn him out every morning.I have to admit that I really enjoyed this tale. It's very well written, crisp and clean. The voice feels real and honest which isn't always the case with memoirs. The care and upkeep and training info for the donkeys included sounds correct .... Even the parts about stubborn nonsense. There's a distinct joy that comes through on almost every page here and I laughed out loud several times. The included photos are great.
